Physically and mentally debilitated after Guadalcanal, Leckie, Basilone and their comrades land in Melbourne. While his buddies carouse, Leckie becomes attached to an Australian woman. Basilone is awarded the Medal of Honor.

1.Part One

The attack on Pearl Harbor leads Robert Leckie and John Basilone into combat; Eugene Sledge says goodbye to pal Sid Phillips.

2.Part Two

The 1st and 7th Marines endure jungle hardships and a Japanese barrage in an attempt to retake a lost airfield in Guadalcanal.

3.Part Three

On leave in Melbourne, Leckie finds romance, while Basilone receives a Medal of Honor -- and orders to return home to the U.S.

4.Part Four

As Sledge trains for combat in the U.S., Leckie and the 1st Marines combat the enemy and the elements in the jungles of New Britain.

5.Part Five

While Basilone reluctantly plays the war hero at home, Sledge gets his first taste of combat on the island of Peleliu.

6.Part Six

Sledge and Leckie battle oppressive heat and lack of water as the 1st Marines continue their assault on the Peleliu airfield.

7.Part Seven

The Marines secure their objective at the Battle of Peleliu, though not without great cost. Sledge veers to the edge of moral collapse.

8.Part Eight

Basilone returns to Camp Pendleton, where he courts fellow Marine Lena Riggi before shipping out to Iwo Jima.

9.Part Nine

Sledge and the 1st Marines relieve an embattled Army division in Okinawa, straining bodies and minds.

10.Part Ten

Leckie and Sledge adjust to life after war. Lena pays an emotional visit to Basilone's hometown.
