In April 1995, Bryant Gumbel began hosting Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, HBO Sports’ monthly magazine-style program that explores the issues, controversies and personalities that are prevalent in the world of sports.

Since its inception, Real Sports has been honored with 32 Emmy Awards, as well as three duPont-Columbia University Awards for broadcast journalism. In May 2013, the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication recognized Real Sports with a prestigious George F. Peabody Award for enterprising reporting in 2012 and again in 2016. The selection committee wrote, “Gumbel’s show continued to be one of TV’s finest news magazines, period.”

Underscoring the program’s capacity for distinctive and groundbreaking reporting, the series captured all three prestigious sports broadcast journalism awards in 2016 – the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Journalism; a duPont Award for the show’s work on the dangers confronting laborers in Qatar’s massive sports buildup; and a Peabody Award for the eye-opening investigative report on illegal poachers decimating the African elephant population.

The program won its first Sports Emmys following the inaugural 1995 season, for a report on college football player Adam Warmuth and a profile of legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson. In 1996 the show was honored by the highly regarded Center for the Study of Sport in Society and Northeastern University in Massachusetts for Excellence in Sports Journalism. The show received another Sports Emmy for Gumbel’s 1996 report on the 30th anniversary of the 1966 NCAA Championship Texas Western basketball team and another the following year for Outstanding Sports Journalism. The 1998 Sports Emmy Awards included three more for Real Sports, including the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Edited Sports Series. The 1999 Sports Emmys added another triumph for the show, as Gumbel received the award for Outstanding Journalism for an investigative piece on counterfeit golf clubs. The program received a 2000 Sports Emmy for a report on baseball recruiting practices in the Dominican Republic, marking the fourth straight year Real Sports won the award for Outstanding Sports Journalism.

A 2001 Sports Emmy marked the fifth straight Outstanding Sports Journalism award bestowed upon the program, recognizing the feature on high school basketball sensation Amar’e Stoudemire. The next year, Real Sports captured the 2002 Sports Emmy for Outstanding Edited Sports Series. In April, 2004, the program received two Sports Emmys, the Outstanding Sports Journalism award for Gumbel’s report on the imprisonment of former Georgia high school football star Marcus Dixon and the Outstanding Long Feature award for his profile of race car driver Alex Zanardi, who lost both legs in a crash.

At the May 2005 Sports Emmy Awards, Real Sports was recognized twice, for Outstanding Edited Sports Series and Outstanding Sports Journalism.

In a virtual repeat of the 2005 Sports Emmy Awards, Real Sports was honored twice at the May 2006 ceremony. The program won for Outstanding Long Feature and for Outstanding Sports Journalism. Gumbel’s reporting on the disturbing growth of racism in European pro soccer captured the 2006 Outstanding Sports Journalism Emmy.

At the 28th annual Sports Emmy Awards, Real Sports received two more trophies, including Outstanding Sports Journalism for Gumbel’s report on the troubles in horse-racing’s Jockeys Guild and Outstanding Edited Sports Series/Anthologies. Real Sports has been honored for Outstanding Sports Journalism 18 times overall.

Some of Gumbel’s most compelling interviews include one-on-ones with baseball legend Derek Jeter (2018);Sean McVay of the Rams (2018); NFL stars Russell Wilson (2015), Plaxico Burress (2011), Randy Moss (2005) and Terrell Owens (1996); fallen baseball star Denny McLain (1999); hoops star Brandon Jennings (2009); pro golfers Phil Mickelson (2002), John Daly (1998) and Vijay Singh (2005); track star Usain Bolt (2008); baseball star Ryan Howard (2007); former NFL star QB Troy Aikman (2011); former NFL head coach Jon Gruden (2012); and his revisit of the shocking encounter between NBA players Kermit Washington and Rudy Tomjanovich (2001).

Bryant has also reported on the largely unknown world of women’s bodybuilding; the dangers of fans being hit with foul balls at major league parks; the alarming increase in gun violence in Chicago directed at young athletes who were once given a “Hooper’s Pass;” excessive drinking at NFL games; the police shooting of minor league baseball player Robbie Tolan in his Texas driveway; and concussions on the high school level. In fall 2012, Gumbel traveled to North Carolina for a touching and inspiring profile of Chancellor Lee Adams, Rae Carruth’s unwanted son.

With an eye on global issues that have far-reaching impact, Gumbel, who has delivered more than 100 reports to the franchise, has traveled overseas to report on the role of the Ultras soccer community in the Egyptian political revolution, the largely unchecked power of the International Olympic Committee, the effects of global warming on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the alarming presence of racism in European soccer leagues.

In Sept. 1996, the National Association of Minorities in Cable (NAMIC) presented Gumbel with the annual award that “recognizes an individual for making an outstanding contribution toward promoting diversity in the entertainment/telecommunications industry.”

One of television’s most accomplished broadcasters, Gumbel was with NBC for more than 20 years, where he hosted “TODAY” for 15 years, longer than anyone else in the show’s history. During his time with Today, he won an Emmy for his interviews. He anchored the network’s coverage of the 1988 Olympic Games from Seoul, South Korea and co-anchored NBC’s coverage of the 1992 presidential election.

Gumbel joined CBS News in 1997. There, he hosted his own prime-time program, Public Eye, as well as the network’s morning news program, The Early Show, before retiring from broadcast network television in May 2002. He also co-hosted Flashpoints on PBS, a quarterly public-affairs series that zeroed in on national issues.

Gumbel has compiled a remarkably diverse array of credits. He has interviewed superpower leaders and Super Bowl heroes, and has covered foreign wars, elections, international summits and presidential inaugurations.

Gumbel has anchored and reported from all corners of the globe, including Europe, China, Australia, Russia, Cuba, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. He covered the outbreak of the Persian Gulf War from Saudi Arabia, the reopening of the arms negotiations from Geneva and the tenth anniversary of the fall of Saigon from Ho Chi Minh City. Gumbel earned an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for Outstanding Foreign Affairs Work for his interview with top Kremlin officials in Sept. 1984. He also received an Edward Weintal Prize for diplomatic reporting and George Foster Peabody Award for his efforts in Vietnam.

In addition to his work with HBO, Gumbel has received four Emmy Awards, the United Negro College Fund’s highest honor, the Frederick D. Patterson Award, as well as the Martin Luther King Award from the Congress of Racial Equality and three NAACP Image Awards. For orchestrating and anchoring the Africa broadcasts, Gumbel has been honored with the International Journalism Award from TransAfrica, the Africa’s Future Award from the U.S. Committee for UNICEF, and the leadership award from the African American Institute.

Prior to his NBC News assignment, Gumbel worked for NBC Sports from fall 1975 to winter 1982, serving as the host of virtually all its primary programs and championship event broadcasts, including Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the NCAA basketball tournament. He also hosted its coverage of the PGA Tour in 1990.

Gumbel’s broadcast career began in Oct. 1972, when he was named sportscaster for KNBC-TV Los Angeles.

He was born Sept. 29, 1948, in New Orleans and raised in Chicago. Gumbel graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine with a liberal arts degree. Gumbel has received honorary doctorates from Bates, Xavier, Holy Cross, Providence College and Clark Atlanta University. He has served on the boards of the United Way of New York City, Xavier University in New Orleans and his alma mater.

Soledad O’Brien is an award-winning documentarian, journalist, speaker, author and philanthropist. She is CEO of the Starfish Media Group, a multi-platform media production company dedicated to telling empowering and authentic stories that elevate today’s most important social issues.

In June of 2013, O’Brien joined the Peabody-award-winning team of HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel and reports regularly for the series.

She has appeared as an anchor on CNN, MSNBC and NBC, and hosted projects for NatGeo, A&amp;E and is Executive Producer of the Lifetime Billboard Music Awards and host and Executive Producer of Mysteries and Scandals on Oxygen.

O’Brien is Philanthropy Editor of Worth Magazine and is a frequent contributor of op-ed pieces for publications like the Huffington Post and the New York Daily News.

Earlier in her career, O’Brien co-anchored on Weekend Today, and reported for the Today show and NBC Nightly News. In 2003, O’Brien transitioned to CNN, where she was the face of CNN’s morning news shows for many years. She also anchored the CNN documentary unit where she created the In America documentary series.

O’Brien’s has been recognized with three Emmy awards for her coverage of the Haiti earthquake, the 2012 election and for a series called Kids and Race. She was honored twice with the George Foster Peabody award for her coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and her reporting on the BP Gulf Coast Oil Spill. Her reporting on the Southeast Asia tsunami garnered CNN an Alfred I. DuPont Award. And, she is winner of two Gracie awards.

She has been named on People magazine’s list of the 50 Most Beautiful People 2001 and was on People en Español′s 50 Most Beautiful list 2004. She was named to Irish American magazine’s "Top 100 Irish Americans" on two occasions, and was on Black Enterprise magazine’s 2005 Hot List. Also in 2005, she was awarded Groundbreaking Latina of the Year by Catalina magazine. In 2006 she was featured in the Newsweek cover story "15 People Who Make America Great".

O’Brien was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists in 2010. In 2013, O’Brien taught at Harvard University as a Distinguished Fellow and was appointed to the board of directors of the Foundation for the National Archives. In 2015, O’Brien joined the RAND Corporation’s Board of Trustees.

She is also the author of two books, her critically acclaimed memoir The Next Big Story and Latino in America.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, O’Brien and her husband, Brad, created the PowHerful Foundation to help young women get to and through college. The foundation hosts the PowHerful summits that support hundreds of high school and college-age women with mentoring, professional development and strategies for academic success.

Jon Frankel joined the award-winning cast of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel in the spring of 2006 as a correspondent. Frankel’s experience in hard news and sports television make him a perfect fit for the show’s intelligent and unique look at athletics and the surrounding issues that affect the games and its athletes.

Among his most impactful stories on Real Sports were the profile of rehabilitated baseball star Josh Hamilton; the use of performance-enhancing drugs in horses; the unique bond shared by George and Coby Karl; an investigation into the death of boxer Arturo Gatti; the use of drugs in the world of competitive surfing; the effects of smokeless tobacco in baseball; the impact of budget cuts on local high school athletic programs in the state of Ohio and a profile of female MMA star Ronda Rousey..

At the 2012 Sports Emmy Awards, Frankel’s compelling portrait of former New Orleans Saint Steve Gleason won the category of Outstanding Long Feature.

In February 2014, Frankel led an in-depth look into the gun industry and their marketing of shooting sports to young children.

At the 2015 Sports Emmy Awards, honoring work done in 2014, Frankel’s investigation of the gun industry and their marketing aimed toward children won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Journalism.

Frankel was a correspondent on the acclaimed 2016 Real Sports expose on the International Olympic Committee that captured a duPont-Columbia University broadcast journalism award plus the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Journalism.

With an eye for stories that others might have missed, he reported in 2018 on the growing concern that youth sports in America is creating a sports gap in which children from lower-income households are being squeezed out of the game.

Prior to his work at CBS as a correspondent on The Early Show, Frankel served as a general assignment reporter for ABC News between the years 1998-1999. His time at the network was split between reports for World News Tonight, Nightline, Good Morning America, and as a substitute anchor for World News Now.

Jon also worked for NBC as a correspondent for the Today show between 1995-1997. He also served as a sports anchor for WNBC-TV New York, WPLG-TV Miami, and WPEC-TV West Palm Beach.

Frankel spent one year as a producer and editor for NFL Films (1987-1988) and became friends with another HBO broadcaster, Bob Costas, as an associate producer for Costas’ nationally syndicated radio talk show, Costas Coast to Coast.

Frankel attended Syracuse University where he graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism and political science. The sportscaster remains active competing in marathons, triathlons, and Ironman competitions. He currently lives in Manhattan with his wife and two children.

Widely recognized as one of the most talented and opinionated network television broadcasters, Mary Carillo achieved a longtime personal goal by joining HBO Sports in 1996. Her first assignment was to work her first-ever Wimbledon. Carillo joined broadcasting partners Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, John Lloyd, Barry MacKay and Jim Lampley in providing commentary and analysis on the network's coverage of the Wimbledon Championships.

In 1997 she made her debut as a correspondent on Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, the network’s monthly magazine-styled sports journalism program. In May of 2006, Carillo earned a Sports Emmy Award for “Outstanding Long Feature” for the inspiring story of the Hoyt Family.

In 2009, she reported on the tragic death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart. She has also traveled the globe, finding remarkable human interest stories to share with the Real Sports audience.

A network broadcaster for three decades, Carillo began her broadcasting career in 1980 as an analyst for USA Network. She also worked a host of tournaments for ESPN. In 1986 she joined CBS Sports and has worked the U.S. Open every year since. Her CBS duties expanded to include reporting assignments at the 1992, '94 and '98 Winter Olympic Games.

She has served as a broadcaster for NBC Sports during the most recent Summer and Winter Olympic Games, earning high marks for her versatility. Mary has been a mainstay on the network’s Olympic coverage, reporting on everything from skiing to skeleton to hosting studio programming. She can be seen doing tennis for NBC. Recently, she joined the broadcast team at The Tennis Channel.

In December of 2018, Mary was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame for her contributions in transforming and revolutionizing the business.

For HBO’s groundbreaking 1999 documentary, Dare to Compete: The Struggle of Women in Sports, she served as co-writer with Frank Deford. The efforts of Carillo and the rest of the documentary’s contributors were rewarded with a 2000 George Foster Peabody Award.

She also worked on the 2006 HBO Sports documentary film Billie Jean King: Portrait of a Pioneer as story advisor and interviewer and has subsequently served in the same capacity for the HBO documentaries on Red Sox icon Ted Williams; the dramatic 1960 U.S. Open finish at Cherry Hills; and Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro.

Carillo played on the women's professional circuit from 1977 to 1980. She was ranked as high as No. 33 when she retired. She won the French Open mixed doubles title with her partner, John McEnroe, in 1977. In the spring of 2011, she served on the production team that produced the HBO Sports film McEnroe/Borg: Fire &amp; Ice.

David Scott is a veteran television journalist and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel's first Producer/Correspondent. His work as a network news producer has won some of the industry’s highest honors, including five News and Documentary Emmy awards, two Columbia-Dupont awards, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists Prize.

As a Real Sports producer, David broke the story of the police shooting of minor leaguer Robbie Tolan on his parent’s front porch after being mistaken for a car thief. The Tolan shooting and David’s Real Sports segments about the American race gap in swimming and the 2009 collapse of the Dallas Cowboys’ practice facility earned Sports Emmy nominations.

In July 2014, David’s first segment as a Real Sports correspondent addressed the controversial 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which exposed the harsh working conditions endured by laborers and the alleged corruption that occurred to secure the bid.

During his time as an on-air correspondent on Real Sports, Scott has earned many of journalism’s highest honors. In 2016, Scott’s segment on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar earned a duPont-Columbia University Award for broadcast journalism.

In 2015, Scott presented an investigative report titled “The Killing Fields,” in which he led Real Sports to Congo, Tanzania and Kenya to document the billion-dollar, criminal enterprise that is the ivory trade, the sickening slaughter of African elephants that fuels it, the devotion and bravery of rangers trying to protect them, and the delusion of trophy hunters who insist the money they bring to Africa somehow slows the decimation. The segment earned a prestigious George F. Peabody Award in 2016.

In May 2016, Scott earned a Sports Emmy Award for “Outstanding Sports Journalism” for a 2015 comprehensive expose on domestic violence issues in MMA.

In July of 2017, Scott delivered a blockbuster story that generated international headlines. Real Sports obtained the first U.S. television interview in several years with the controversial Chechnya Republic ruler Ramzan Kadyrov, who responded to allegations of arresting and torturing gay men in the region, dealing with U.S.-Russia relations on a global stage, and outlined his ambitious plan to build and export a Mixed Martial Arts empire.

The alarming story of the largely underreported story of a concussion crisis in the NHL was the topic of a widely seen February 2018 expose fronted by Scott. The harrowing life-threatening conditions that the local guides known as the Sherpas must endure in order to earn a living taking ambitious climbers up the dangerous Mt. Everest was reported on by Scott in an August 2018 feature.

In May of 2007, Andrea Kremer, one of the most accomplished sports journalists on television, joined HBO’s&nbsp;Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. Kremer, who the&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;has called “the best TV interviewer in the business of covering the NFL,” has contributed a host of compelling profiles and features since joining the Emmy Award-winning program.

In August of 2018, she was honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, which recognizes “long-time exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football.”

Among the most memorable interviews she has done at HBO are compelling one-on-ones with Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, Lane Kiffin, Barret Robbins, Rex Ryan, DeMaurice Smith, Bill Parcells, Phil Jackson, Joakim Noah, Bruce Arians and Robert Kraft. In March of 2011 she was the correspondent for the college football special report on Real Sports that made national headlines with its in-depth reporting. And in the summer of 2011 landed a revealing and poignant interview with the NFL’s Harbaugh brothers – Jim and John.

For the season premiere of the program in 2012, Kremer reported on the largely unknown use of Toradol in NFL locker-rooms. In 2014, Kremer provided a detailed report exploring the considerable use of marijuana by NFL players and why the drug is preferred for pain management by so many when compared to opiate-based painkillers that can become addictive.

Her November 2016 expose on yoga guru Bikram Choudry shined a light on allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. The report made international headlines.

Kremer went one-on-one with Texas Rangers reliever Matt Bush, who made an extraordinary after serving time in prison, and her profile of ESPN’s NBA commentator Doris Burke was one of the signature pieces on REAL SPORTS in 2018.

In 2011, she was named one of the 10 greatest female sportscasters of all time.&nbsp;TV Guide&nbsp;said Kremer is "among TV's best sports correspondents of either sex," and her work is "distinguished by her eagerness to calmly ask tough questions and her refusal to pursue the same old story." She has received numerous awards and accolades, including two Emmys and a Peabody. She was the first inductee into the Cynopsis Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of her many contributions to journalism. In 2005, Kremer received a PRISM Award for her ESPN story on Dexter Manley and in 2017 she was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

Kremer is currently chief correspondent for the NFL Network. She led the network's coverage and in-depth reporting on health and safety, a critical issue facing professional sports. She has chronicled All Pro defensive back Darrelle Revis’ year-long comeback from a devastating ACL injury for “A Football Life,” she interviewed Johnny Jolly in prison for drug abuse and then a year later as he returned to the Green Bay Packers’ starting lineup, and also got wide receiver Laurent Robinson to open up about how his life changed after suffering four concussions in four months.

In 2014, Kremer helped launch&nbsp;We Need to Talk, the first ever all-female nationally televised weekly sports show on CBS Sports Network. Airing in prime time, the show features a rotating group of female panelists discussing all the hot topics and the latest news from across the sports landscape. After its inaugural season, the show won a Gracie Grand Award for On Air Talent: Sports Program.

In addition to her current TV work, Kremer teaches a course of her own design, “The Art of the Interview,” in the Department of Journalism at Boston University’s College of Communication. In 2015, she was appointed the Andrew R. Lack Fellow at Boston University. She has also guest lectured at several leading institutions including Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Prior to Kremer’s current roles, she was a reporter for NBC Sports (2006-2012). For five seasons Kremer was the sideline and feature reporter for the Emmy Award-winning&nbsp;Sunday Night Football&nbsp;and periodically reported on football for the network's popular&nbsp;Today&nbsp;morning show. During the summer of 2012, Kremer was front and center for NBC Sports as she covered swimming at the London Olympics where her insight and unparalleled storytelling ability was featured across all of the NBC’s platforms. In 2010, Kremer covered speedskating at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and in 2008 she was lauded for her reporting on Olympic icon Michael Phelps' dramatic pursuit of a record eight gold medals in Beijing.

Before joining NBC, Kremer was ESPN's first female correspondent (1989-2006), providing in-depth reports for&nbsp;SportsCenter,&nbsp;Sunday NFL Countdown&nbsp;and&nbsp;Monday Night Countdown, among other studio shows.

Prior to joining ESPN, Kremer worked at NFL Films (1984-89), where she was a producer, director and later an on-air reporter for the nationally syndicated show&nbsp;This is the NFL.

Kremer began her career in Ardmore, Pennsylvania as the sports editor of the Main Line Chronicle (1982-84). A Philadelphia native, she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.
