Six Feet Under is Michael Cuesta's first television directorial experience, though he has directed myriad television commercials, and has worked as a still photographer. "I'm not really interested in television," he says. "I've been offered other series, and I've turned them down - but I really like working with Alan and the cast." He made his feature film debut last year with L.I.E., which received critical acclaim and garnered two Independent Spirit awards at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002.
In fact, L.I.E. led to Michael's involvement with the show. Says Executive Producer Alan Poul, "During the second season, we had hired a director for the fourth episode, but he fell out one week before the start of pre-production. Alan Ball and I were alarmed, but that night we went to see L.I.E., and it was a revelation. The next morning we booked Michael. He's a fantastic fit for the show."
