Reverend Norman Balthus is Justin Crowe's mentor and former guardian. Ran an orphanage in Stockton, taking Justin and Iris in as children. Norman and his wife, Rose (d. 1927) were surrogate parents to the two children. Highly respected within the California Methodist Church, Balthus has helped Justin throughout his career, paving the way for his young, gifted protege, lending moral and financial support.
